/Jepthe /and /Jonas /are masterpieces of the Italian Baroque. /Jepthe/ relates the story of Jephtah, a man forced to sacrifice his daughter because of a promise he has made to God, and ends with his daughter’s beautiful lament in the hills, accompanied by a chorus of echoes. /Jonas/, meanwhile, narrates the story of the prophet Jonah swallowed by the Leviathan as a test of his faithfulness of God; the final aria is a passionate prayer from the belly of the whale.
